HISTORY OF THE PARADE
THE FIRST SANTA PARADE IN BURNABY
HOW IT ALL STARTED...
The story has been passed down from the first year volunteers, but it all started with a few volunteers and the local Burnaby Edmonds Lions Club who approached the City of Burnaby.
On November 27, 2003 the first Santa Claus Parade in the City of Burnaby occurred at the initiative of Phil Henderson, Metro Monarch Lions Club. As a result, the Edmonds Town Centre Community & Business Association, The Lions Club, The City of Burnaby, and the Burnaby Firefighters all came together, and planned out the first parade. Our friend Phil Henderson was the Parade Marshall from 2003 to 2007, who was the driving force in getting our parade off the ground the first year.
Our first parade, along Edmonds St from Canada Way to Fulton Ave, was considered a great sucess, and has continued to be a great sucess, and we are proud to say that Burnaby's only Santa Claus parade is in our neighbourhood.
It's not a big parade, but it is a grassroots neighbourhood operation, with parade participants from a different cultures, ages, businesses, social awareness causes and non-profit and more. |
